1978 Napa Valley Chardonnay
Winemaker's Notes
1978 was a vintage that will be long remembered for the intense heat in September. Rapid sugar development in close to mature Chardonnay grapes resulted in a flurry of harvest activity.
Vintage Weather
Temperate Consistent. Good winter rains. Long and warm growing season. Late heat led to a somewhat compressed harvest. High extract and body with well-balanced fruit.
Tasting Notes
Extra time in Limousin oak barrels was the key to bring into harmony the huge extract and varietal character produced by this extraordinary vintage. Melon and honey-like aromas and flavors blend with oak undertones to balance the big body of a wine that dramatizes the effects of a truly great vintage. An additional year and a half of bottle age is strongly recommended to enjoy the bountiful potential of 1978.
